Sizing an EP network
Sizing rests on three elements: the design rainfall intensity (return period), the project's active surface area, and the runoff coefficient (a roof or an asphalt surface sheds far more water than a green space). From this data, the flows to be evacuated and the section of the pipework or retention structures are calculated.
The most common solutions
- Swales and ditches: open-air collection and slowing of water;
- Buried EP networks: sized pipework, manholes and outfalls;
- Retention basins: temporary storage to shave off peak flows;
- Infiltration: where the soil allows, returning water to the natural environment.
Plan ahead during earthworks
Slopes, subgrade and trenches are prepared during the earthworks phase. Integrating the EP network from the outset avoids costly rework and ensures efficient gravity flow.
